About

Born in Estonia and currently living in Thailand, Alo is a versatile engineer who considers software engineering a hobby rather than a job and spends all his waking (and often non-waking) hours pondering about the latest problem to solve. Alo is passionate about the proper design and structure of software components, always considering the unexpected usage patterns in the system.

Alo’s professional software engineering career started at the age of 20 when he spent two years developing an open source modular multi-network and multi-platform peer-to-peer software called Hydranode supporting multiple file-sharing networks and other protocols. This built a strong foundation for distributed and network programming as well as user interface design and usability engineering (in close co-operation with a long-term friend and designer Joakim Kuusemaa). In 2007, Alo was employed by Vusion Inc., to build a distributed content delivery platform for delivering video to end-users in a fast and effective manner across proxies and firewalls. Alo returned to user interface engineering in 2009 when he joined Rippol – an intelligent social video discovery site – as co-founder and director of engineering to work on both the backend and frontend design and programming of the video discovery engine as well as coordinating the remaining team across multiple problem domains.

When he’s not coding or analyzing user interface usage patterns, he loves playing pool, learning to play the drums and driving around the country-side.

What others are saying about Alo

“Alo is an outstanding software engineer. He has very good expertise on distributed systems, web technologies and programming while always eager to learn new areas. He is very diligent and innovative–you have to start talking with him on an idea and he adds many new perspectives to that idea and more. During his work at Vusion, he always exceeded everyone’s expectations–one of the superstars of my team. Alo also takes initiative to work with others and contribute beyond his assigned tasks. He is a must have on any software team. Highly recommended.” February 21, 2010
